I'd like to see the zone host a website design contest

Post 2 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Tuesday, 15-Jan-2008 7:32:45

I'd like to buy the world a home, and keep it company.

Post 3 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 15-Jan-2008 15:17:17

hmm....think there was going to be a contest for an advert or something, but iver there was not enough interest, or they forgot about it with all the excitement of tune trivia

Post 4 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Tuesday, 15-Jan-2008 18:42:23

I think this could be fun for the folks that own snd have designed websites well my design contest I mean.

Post 5 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Tuesday, 15-Jan-2008 19:53:22

Design what exactly?

Post 6 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Tuesday, 15-Jan-2008 21:15:15

please what I've said this already its a website design contest, like my website or some other station or personal site that was coded by hand based on how clean the site is, how organized the content and other stuff.

Post 7 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Wednesday, 16-Jan-2008 0:54:17

Not a bad idea but what do you get if you win this contest?

Post 8 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Wednesday, 16-Jan-2008 2:03:47

a free year of preminium and a banner or something that says you got first place is the contest

Post 9 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Wednesday, 16-Jan-2008 8:38:14

I'll bet about half the zone wouldn't have any idea how to design a site.

For that reason, I think this is a bad idea.

However, your idea brings up another one. Why not have a contest to see who can have the most unique suggestion for improving the zone. The judges could be the cls. The winner could get--what else--many many points.

I thought it was chris or JJ.

Post 12 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Wednesday, 16-Jan-2008 10:14:14

JJ created that site, I'm pretty sure, great site actually.

Post 13 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Wednesday, 16-Jan-2008 14:26:40

to be honest I know more than enough who do know how to design a site, its that you do not bob

Post 14 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Wednesday, 16-Jan-2008 14:40:17

Yes, but I know the difference between criticism and opinion.

How do you know what I know about building a web site?

Bob

Post 15 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Friday, 18-Jan-2008 0:17:32

I'd like to see an admin or cl comment on this idea

Post 16 by Q (Take my advice, I'm not using it anyhow.) on Friday, 18-Jan-2008 12:18:34

I think if we are to have contests for the users on the Zone, we should try to have a larger involvement from the community as a whole.
I think that many users don't care about snazzy websites, what they're interested in, is how functional such a site is, and how they as users would be able to benifit from said websites.

So, although I do not doom the idea, I think that there won't be as much interest from the rest of the community.
Of course, feel free to differ.

Post 17 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Friday, 18-Jan-2008 22:10:38

Q my contest is based on cleaniness and how functional it is.

Post 18 by Q (Take my advice, I'm not using it anyhow.) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 3:02:39

I realise that, but still, I'm not sure that this would draw as much attention or involvement from the zone community.

Post 19 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 4:26:22

I agree to a point but it could if its done correctly

Post 20 by admin (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 13:45:57

It could work, but I do think it's a bit specific and a niche. What about the writing contest idea from a while back? Start with an opening free for all, pick the top ten, and then do a survivor-style thing where you have to write in a different style each round.

Post 21 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 15:46:33

yeah admin, like the idea of that. also liked the idea of the contest of coming up with the best way to improve the zone

Post 22 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 15:51:22

I personally like all 3 ideas. The writing contest also comes down to who knows how to write in certain styles...So, in my opinion it's as specialized as the Web site contest, and users could vote on the site they like the best...Allows users to get involved and help Web designers create sites that users would like better...And that they'd be able to use better. LOL, also might make me get off my butt and finish my work instead of just working when I feel up to it, but that's another issue all together.

Post 23 by admin (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 15:58:14

We could do several contests, actually. They dont' necessarily need to be as involved as Idol or Tune Trivia. But we certainly could take submissions of websites over a time and award a prize.
On that note, if anyone has any sort of prize they'd like to submit for a future contest, send me an Email or use the contact link on the home page.

Post 24 by HauntedReverie (doing the bad mango) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 16:37:39

a writing contest would be great. you could also incorperate performing your work into it as well like, spoken performance I mean, how well you voice your writings.

Post 25 by moyzey (i'm posting? huh?) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 16:47:19

mmm, a writing contest sounds excellent. I know there are a few really great writers on the zone, you only have to check the relevant board to see it.

Post 26 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Saturday, 19-Jan-2008 18:39:53

I'm open to a writing contest, but I'd like to see a web design one too

Post 27 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Sunday, 20-Jan-2008 0:34:23

I want to see a cobol programming contest, because It'd come down to me and blbobby for the top two. Face it web design is to technical, and anyway people who actually have decent skills like me would blow idiots like you away FlyingPhoenix.

Post 28 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 20-Jan-2008 1:21:08

Are insults necessary? And actually in my opinion, and I do program and Web design, Web design is the easier of the two, and more people play around with Web design than programming software. I happen to do both, and there are some who do, but I still think this is a good idea. Could help the designers make better sites and the users get their voices heard on what they like and/or need.

Post 29 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Sunday, 20-Jan-2008 2:31:57

cattleya I have him on ignore so its not like I can see his insult anyways but the idea of my contest is to help designers with making sites function al and to give them incentive not to just slap something up and actually take the time to code something

Post 30 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 20-Jan-2008 5:50:49

Oh well, I think it's not a good idea for the zone, but it's no sweat off of anything of mine.

Why doesn't some rich sob with lots of points to give away give some points for the best web design. You'd have to find judges etc. But, why wait for a sanction from the admins?

I'll have to think about a writer's contest, rules and all, but, any interested donors wanting to donate points? Any interested writers wanting to help design the rules? Maybe if I get off of my lazy Texas ass, I'll set up a topic in the writers' block for the discussion about how this would work.

RomanBattleMask, I'll start:

identification division.

Post 31 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 20-Jan-2008 17:11:56

I think the Web site design and writing contest are wonderful ideas. I personally wouldn't enter the writing contest even though I write. Why wouldn't I? Because I don't use or know all of the standard writing styles, and I rarely write about approved topics...However, the judges for Web site design? Users who want their voices heard. Who are willing to take the time to be involved and write their reactions to all participating sites...Or however in depth the administration around here decides to make it... Anyways, willing to help with ideas and/or anything else needed to make this plausable, fair and useful to all. Just let me know. As far as rewards. I can't donate at the moment, but maybe in the very near future this will change as daily I'm working on Web site and software issues...

Post 32 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Sunday, 20-Jan-2008 17:51:44

Procedure devision.

Post 33 by chikorita (move over school!) on Saturday, 26-Jan-2008 19:26:49

bob and rbm what was that? lol. i love the web design idea! html isn't really that bad. i've written two docs by myself so far, one of them is a test that i use to, um, test new things i learn in html, the other one is the "no-break space memorial" a page talking about, um, the no-break space, which is   in html and what in the world it's used for. and it's got a link to start an email to myself in your favorite client!

i would win it! lol! btw if anyone wants any of these files, send me a private message or email.

Post 34 by FlyingPhoenix (move over school!) on Sunday, 27-Jan-2008 5:25:25

website and writing contests for the win, come on sponsor these please.

Post 35 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 27-Jan-2008 8:48:58

Ok, I'll take it up with the other cls and admins.

I need some ideas here about how it would work, who would best judge it etc.

By the way: Jared, you skipped "data division" plus a lot more. Get with the program.

Bob

Post 36 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Sunday, 27-Jan-2008 13:52:50

Sorry Bob, this is nothing but a driver program. All the functions that it calls are stored in other datasets and have the data division and file descriptors.

thanks bobby
